::. Eastpoint
Eastpoint is the breadbasket of Franklin County's
seafood industry. Located along coastal Highway 98 just east
of the
bridge leading to St. George Island, Eastpoint is generally
the stopping off point for visitors arriving or leaving St.
George Island and Apalachicola who are looking for the freshest
seafood available in this area.
Seafood docks stretch for nearly two miles along the coastal
highway - providing haven for a fleet of fishermen hauling
oysters and shrimp from the nutrient-rich waters in Apalachicola
Bay to shore where they are unloaded into seafood processing
houses and small rustic seafood markets alongside the road.
Visitors to this coastal hamlet can dine in several small restaurants
on the bay while watching the shrimp and oyster boats bring
in the day's catch.
:: History
Eastpoint
was established in 1898 when a group of families near Columbus
Georgia rafted down the Apalachicola River
with their belongings and homesteaded the area. Early travel
between Eastpoint, Apalachicola and Carrabelle was accomplished
via paddlewheel steamer until 1932 when a ferry service was
started between the towns. Roads from Eastpoint to Carrabelle
and Sumatra were constructed around 1915 and the Apalachicola
Bay Bridge linking Eastpoint to Apalachicola was completed
in 1965.
Today Eastpoint is an eclectic mix of seafood businesses and
an emerging commercial district near the Island Drive area
leading to St. George Island. Generally considered the next
growth area in the county because of moderate land prices,
several businesses serving the construction and tourism industries
of St. George Island have sprung up. Residential growth and
residential subdivisions have blossomed and there is an upscale
residential development just east of town as well as plans
for waterview townhomes along the Eastpoint stretch of Franklin
County. If you are looking for Eastpoint commercial property
