Marine Life & Nature Walk

The Apalachicola Estuary encompasses over 246,000 acres of beautiful Apalachicola Bay and is the 2nd largest Estuarine Research Reserve system in the nation. The educational center exhibits a variety of intriguing plants, animals, shells and fish species. Open Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Chestnut Street Cemetery
Located on Highway 98 between 6th & 8th Streets in Apalachicola
As you walk along the grounds, the beauty in the relics and old stones reveal the history of Apalachicola. Established in 1831, the cemetery tells stories of the community and the people who lived here.

Fort Gadsden Historic Site

Located on the east bank of the Apalachicola River-45 minutes north of Eastpoint on highway 65
Travel up the River or drive to Historic Fort Gadsden. Learn about the Native Americans and African Americans who occupied the area in the early 1800’s and were present when the fort was destroyed. A miniature replica of the fort and artifacts are on display. Take an afternoon to stroll through the gorgeous grounds & picnic by the water.

John Gorrie State Museum

John Gorrie Museum State Park is located on 6th Street, one block east off Highway 98 in Apalachicola. This museum houses a replica of John Gorrie's ice machine, which was built from the specifications of his 1851 patent. This innovative machine was used to cool patients suffering from yellow fever and became instrumental in the development of the ice industry & air conditioning. Open Thursday-Monday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Orman House Museum

Thomas Orman built this two story Greek Revival Structure in 1838. The wood for the home was cut to measure near Syracuse, New York and shipped to Apalachicola by sailing vessel around the Florida Keys. The home was assembled on the bluff overlooking the estuary and bay of the Apalachicola River. This is one of the oldest homes in the area and is open for you to see its unique design & feel the warmth from the past. Open Thursday – Monday 9:00 a.m-5:00 p.m.

The Three Service Men Statue

The Federal Government has commissioned the construction of five new Vietnam Veteran Memorials. Apalachicola has been chosen as a sight for one of the statues. Frederick Hart designed the original Three Servicemen Statue and it stands as a 7 foot bronze sculpture in the Constitution Gardens in Washington D.C. As a tribute to Vietnam Veterans, raising money to have the statue erected in Apalachicola has been an honor. Raney House Museum

This home was built in 1838 for David E. Raney & his wife. They lived in Apalachicola for many years and were known as pillars of the community and the Trinity Episcopal Church. The home was placed on the National Register of Historic Homes in 1972 and since this time the Historic Society has kept the integrity of the past alive in this old museum. The Apalachicola Area Historic Society opens the home for tours every Saturday from 1 to 4 pm.

St Vincent National Wildlife Refuge

Next to Little St. George Island sits the unspoiled, uninhabited barrier island called St. Vincent. The refuge on this tropical paradise is open during daylight hours and is only accessible by boat. Hike through the trails and discover the eagles, osprey and Island wildlife. See nature displays and find out about the Island at the Visitor’s Center, located on the north end of Market Street in Apalachicola. Open Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Tate’s Hell State Forest

Spend time hiking & biking through the trails in the Forest. Discover the beauty and the rare species of flowers such as the White Top Pitcher Plant, which blooms from March to May, the Swamp Mallow, which blooms from June to September, the Water Lily, which can be seen from April to July, and the Coral Bean, which blooms from December to June.

The Bike Trail
The Bike Trail runs parallel to Gulf Beach Drive and extends for miles. Feel the breeze on your skin and fresh air in your lungs while getting great exercise and a relaxed perspective of the Island.
